What is the AIxBio Research Fellowship?

AI tools are getting better at biology. That is good news for medicine, but it also creates new risks, like making it easier to misuse biology to cause harm. The AIxBio Fellowship brings together people who want to reduce those risks.

For 10 weeks you work on one concrete problem from ERA’s office in Cambridge. You get an expert mentor matched to your project and a dedicated research manager who helps you plan and keep moving. You also join talks, workshops, and dinners with researchers working on AI safety and biosecurity across Cambridge.

What you get

  • A £10,000 stipend for the 10 weeks
  • Travel support to and from Cambridge
  • Full visa sponsorship for international fellows from most countries
  • Meals during working hours
  • Office workspace, a project funding pot, and computing power where your work needs it
  • An expert mentor and a dedicated research manager
  • Help with the practical side of moving to and living in Cambridge

The stipend is there to cover your living costs while you are in Cambridge, and the operations team helps you sort out where to stay. Strong fellows can also be offered a way to continue after the 10 weeks through ERA’s longer Research Scholar roles.

The three tracks

  • Research: turn an open biosecurity question into a project, such as an evaluation method, a safeguard study, or a policy analysis.
  • Placement: join a biosecurity team and own a real piece of their work in research, engineering, policy, or implementation.
  • Founding: test whether a gap in biosecurity needs a new organisation, and build a first tool or pilot.

Who can apply

  • You are 18 or older by the start date.
  • You can be from any country. Visa support is provided.
  • You care about reducing serious biological risks, especially those made worse by AI.
  • You can work full-time, in person, in Cambridge for the 10 weeks.
  • You think clearly and can take ownership of a project.

ERA welcomes people from many backgrounds: AI and software, biology and virology, and policy, governance, and security. If your skills could help, even if you do not fit one box, you can apply.

Do I need research experience?

No. Formal research experience helps, but it is not required. Graduate students, early-career people, experienced researchers, engineers, and founders are all welcome. What matters is how you think and what you want to work on.

Is there an age limit?

Only a minimum. You must be at least 18 by the start of the program. There is no upper age limit.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

No language test is listed. The fellowship runs in English, so you need to be able to work, write, and discuss ideas in English.

Can I apply with average grades?

Yes. Grades are not the focus. The selection looks at your reasoning, your written answers, an interview, and a short work test, so your thinking counts more than your transcript.

Required documents

  • The online written application about your background, interests, and approach to AI and biosecurity
  • Your CV, if the form asks for it
  • A valid passport for the visa process if you are selected

How to write your application

Pick one real problem you care about and say how you would approach it in 10 weeks. Be specific: what is the risk, what would you build or study, and how would you know it worked? You do not need to sound like an expert. A clear, honest answer that shows how you reason beats long technical language.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Open the official AIxBio Fellowship page and read the three tracks.
  2. Choose the track that fits you best.
  3. Complete the written application online.
  4. If shortlisted, take part in the interview.
  5. Complete the work test you are sent.
  6. If selected, start your visa and travel plans with ERA’s support.

Selection process

Selection has three stages: the written application, an interview, and a work test. About 15 fellows are chosen for the Winter 2027 cohort.

Deadline

19 October 2026.
