What is the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarship?

It is one of the Oxford Graduate Scholarships, funded by the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Trust and the University together. It pays for your degree and your living costs, and it builds you as a leader through a structured year of mentoring, discussion, and training.

The aim is clear. Oxford wants strong people from developing countries who will go home and use what they learn to improve public life. If that is you, this scholarship was built for you.

What the scholarship covers

  • 100 percent of your course fees, for the full length of your course
  • A grant for living costs of at least 21,805 pounds a year
  • A leadership programme with long-term mentoring, networking, and skills training

Who can apply

  • You are ordinarily resident in an eligible country. The list covers most of West and Central Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal, Cote d’Ivoire, and their neighbours.
  • You are applying to start a new full-time graduate course at Oxford.
  • You plan to return to your home country after your course.
  • You can show a clear link between your subject, your career, and improving public life at home or in your region.
  • You could not otherwise afford to study at Oxford.

Two things to know. The scholarship is open only to eligible courses, so check that your course is on the list. And students already at Oxford cannot apply unless they are already Weidenfeld-Hoffmann scholars.

Do I need to already be rich or connected?

No. This scholarship exists for people who cannot pay their own way. Financial need is part of who they fund, not a mark against you. What they want is a strong academic record and a real plan to serve your country.

Can I apply with average grades?

Oxford asks for a strong degree, so your grades need to be near the top. If they are, apply with confidence. If they are still building, look at the other fully funded scholarships we post that ask for less, and come back to this one when you are ready.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

Oxford asks for proof of English for most students whose first language is not English. Check your course page for the exact score, and book the test early so it does not hold up your application.

Required steps and documents

  • An Oxford graduate application for an eligible course
  • The Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships Statement, uploaded with your application
  • Your degree transcripts and certificates
  • Proof of English, if your course asks for it
  • References and any written work or test your course requires

How to write your Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Statement

This statement is where you win or lose. Tie three things together: your subject, your career, and the change you want to make at home. Be specific about the problem you care about and how this degree helps you solve it. Write plainly, stay within the length, and make your commitment to your country clear on every page.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Find an eligible Oxford graduate course that fits your goals.
  2. Select the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships and Leadership Programme in the scholarships section of the Oxford graduate application form.
  3. Complete the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships Statement and upload it with your application.
  4. Submit everything by your course’s December 2026 or January 2027 deadline.
  5. If shortlisted, attend an online interview in April 2027. Decisions come by the end of May 2027.

Do not choose a course just because it is funded. Choose the one that fits your career, because your plan to use the degree at home is what they are judging.

Deadline

Deadlines vary by course. You must submit your Oxford course application and the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Statement by your course’s December 2026 or January 2027 deadline.

The exact date is on your course page, so find your course first and note its deadline. Applications held over to the March round or put on a waiting list do not count for this scholarship, so aim for the December or January date and confirm it on the official Oxford page before you submit.
