What is the MOPGA Fellowship?

France launched MOPGA to support research on the climate questions raised at the UN climate conferences. The fellowship brings young researchers from abroad to France for a year to work on a research project with a French lab, and to build lasting links with French science.

What the fellowship covers

  • A monthly grant for 12 months of research in France
  • A placement in a leading French research institution
  • Collaboration with French researchers working on climate and the environment

The exact grant amount and extra support are set out in the official MOPGA 2027 call, so check it before you apply.

Who can apply

  • You hold a PhD, defended between December 2021 and December 2026
  • You are of foreign nationality only. All nationalities except French are eligible.
  • You plan to move to France for the fellowship
  • You do not live and work in France at the time you apply
  • You have not held a MOPGA fellowship before

Do I need a PhD?

Yes. This is for early-career researchers who already hold a PhD, defended within the last five years. If you are still studying, look at the fully funded master’s and PhD scholarships we post instead.

Do I need to speak French?

The official call does not list French as a requirement. Much research in France is done in English, but check with your host lab and read the call for any language details.

Required documents

  • A research project proposal on a climate or environment topic
  • Your CV and list of publications
  • Proof of your PhD
  • Support from your intended French host institution
  • Any other documents listed in the MOPGA 2027 call

How to write your research proposal

Link your project clearly to a climate or environmental problem and to the French lab you want to join. Say what you will do in 12 months, what results you expect, and how the collaboration helps both sides. Keep it specific and realistic.

  1. Read the full MOPGA 2027 call for applications on Campus France.
  2. Find a host lab in France that fits your research.
  3. Prepare your proposal, CV, and supporting documents.
