What is the Scout Adventures Volunteer Programme?

Scout Adventures runs outdoor activity centres across the UK for young people. Each year it brings in residential volunteers from more than 30 countries to deliver activities such as abseiling, kayaking and zip-lining.

You start with a five-day training course, usually at Gilwell Park, then move to one of five adventure centres, including Broadstone Warren in East Sussex and Fordell Firs near Edinburgh. You commit to an average of 35 hours a week over five days, including some evenings and weekends, with up to 18 personal development days to explore and travel.

What you get

  • Visa sponsorship: a Certificate of Sponsorship for overseas volunteers who need a visa
  • Free accommodation on site with other volunteers
  • All meals and your uniform
  • A weekly allowance of £45, plus reimbursement of direct costs
  • Full induction training in instructing, first aid, safeguarding and customer service
  • Recognised instructing qualifications and hundreds of hours of hands-on experience
  • Pick-up from the airport, train or bus station when you arrive

Your flight to the UK is not listed among the benefits, so plan to cover it yourself.

Who can apply

  • Applicants from the UK, Europe and all over the world
  • Aged 30 or under when the placement begins
  • Over 18 when you apply for your visa
  • Previous experience in scouting or guiding, or working with young people
  • A good standard of English
  • Individual applicants only (partners and family cannot be accommodated)

Is there an age limit?

Yes. You must be 18 or over, and 30 or under when the placement begins.

Do I need to be a Scout?

Not necessarily. You need previous experience in scouting and/or working with young people. If you have worked with young people, for example as a coach, teacher or youth leader, describe it clearly in your application. If you are a current Scout or Guide, you upload confirmation from your national organisation.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

No test is named. You need a good standard of English, and you will be interviewed online.

Is there an application fee?

No application fee is mentioned.

  • Mention any outdoor skills, first aid or sports coaching, even informal.
  • Choose a referee who has seen you work with others, such as a scout leader, teacher or coach.
