What is the DSU Regional Scholarship?

DSU stands for Diritto allo Studio Universitario, the right to university study. It is Italy’s way of making sure a student’s money, or lack of it, does not decide whether they can go to university. The Lombardy Region funds it for students at its universities, including the University of Milan.

It is different from a merit-only scholarship. Your family income and assets are looked at alongside your grades. If you come from a low-income family and study hard, both things count in your favour here.

What you get

  • Full or partial exemption from university tuition fees
  • Free accommodation in university residences, where space is available
  • An accommodation contribution if university housing is full
  • Free meals in the university dining halls
  • An annual cash grant, paid in installments
  • A contribution towards books, study materials, and other study costs

The size of your award depends on your assessed need and your results, so check the official DSU call for the bands that apply to your situation.

What you can study

The scholarship covers eligible programs across faculties such as Engineering, Computer Science, Agricultural and Food Sciences, Humanities, Law, Medicine, Pharmacy, Political, Economic and Social Sciences, Science and Technology, and Veterinary Medicine, at Bachelor’s, master’s, single-cycle, and PhD level.

Who can apply

  • International students from any country.
  • You must gain admission to an eligible University of Milan degree program.
  • Your eligibility is judged on your family income and assets, and on academic merit.
  • You submit the required financial and supporting documents.

Is there an age limit?

No general age limit is stated. Eligibility rests on admission to an eligible program, your income, and your academic merit.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

The language requirement comes from the degree program you apply to. Some University of Milan programs are taught in Italian and others in English, each with its own language rule, so check the one for your course.

Can I apply with a low GPA?

The award is built for students with financial need, so your income situation carries real weight alongside your grades. If your income is low and your record is reasonable, you have a genuine case. Get your income and asset documents in order early.

Required documents

  • University admission or enrollment documents
  • Passport copy
  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • Family income and asset documentation
  • Any additional documents named in the official DSU call

How to prepare your income documents

The income and asset papers are the ones people underestimate. They can take time to gather and translate, so start on them the day you decide to apply. A complete, accurate income file is what turns admission into a funded place here.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Apply for admission to an eligible Bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD program at the University of Milan.
  2. Register on the University portal.
  3. Open the DSU Regional Scholarship application through the University’s Online Helpdesk.
  4. Fill it in and upload your financial and academic documents.
  5. Submit before the deadline.

Selection process

Applications are assessed against the official DSU regulations on income and merit. You submit financial and academic documents, and awards are decided according to those criteria.

Deadline

30 September 2026.

This is close, and you need an admission step and a separate scholarship step. Confirm the exact cut-off in the official DSU call, then work backwards from it.
