What is the Universal Youth Leadership Summit?

The summit is organised by the Universal Youth Movement (UYM), a youth organisation based in Perak, Malaysia. The Malaysia 2027 edition is the tenth summit in its UYLS series.

Over four days, delegates join leadership workshops, discussions on sustainable development, networking sessions and a cultural ceremony with participants from around the world. Delegates can also be put forward for awards during the programme.

What you get

Fully funded delegates receive:

  • Return flight ticket reimbursement, up to a designated amount, paid after the summit
  • Accommodation
  • Meals
  • Airport transfers
  • A summit kit and certificate
  • A cultural ceremony and the chance to win awards

Partially funded delegates get a 50% waiver of the programme fee, plus accommodation, meals, airport transfers, the kit and certificate. There are 100 seats in total: 15 fully funded, 30 partially funded, 20 summit pass and 35 self-funded. The self-funded fee is US$460.

The flight is a reimbursement. You book and pay for your ticket first, and the organisers pay you back after the summit, up to their set amount.

Who can apply

  • Applicants of every nationality
  • Aged 18 to 40

  • An interest in creating positive social impact
  • Able to communicate well in English

Is there an age limit?

Yes. You must be between 18 and 40 years old.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

No test certificate is required. You need to be able to communicate well in English, because the summit and the interview are in English.

Is there an application fee?

Yes. The application fee is US$20.99. It is non-refundable and applies to every category, including the fully funded seats.

Do I need leadership experience?

No formal experience is required. The organisers look for leadership potential and an interest in making a positive difference, so a student club, volunteer work or a community project all count.

Required documents

You apply through an online form on the official website. Keep these ready:

  • Your passport details
  • A short description of your leadership or community work
  • Your answers on why you want to attend
  • A way to pay the US$20.99 application fee online

How to write your application

Funded seats are limited, so your answers need to stand out.

  • Tell one real story about a time you led or helped others, even a small one. Specific beats impressive.
  • Link it to the theme “Roots & Rights”: your community, your culture, and the rights or changes you care about.
  • Say what you will do with what you learn in Kuala Lumpur when you get home.
  • Write simply and check your spelling. Clear English matters here, since there is an interview stage.
