What is the FASPE Fellowship?

FASPE is a non-profit organisation founded in 2010 to promote ethical leadership among professionals. Fellows study how doctors, lawyers, journalists, business leaders, clergy and engineers helped design, enable and carry out Nazi policies, then use those lessons to examine the ethical questions in their own professions today.

FASPE says plainly that it is not a Holocaust studies course or a genocide prevention programme. It is a programme on professional ethics. Fellows spend two weeks visiting historical sites in Berlin and Poland and joining daily seminars with specialist faculty, travelling with fellows from other professions.

What you get

  • Round-trip economy-class airfare, including from outside the United States
  • All hotel costs
  • All transport for group travel and activities in Germany and Poland
  • All group meals, plus pocket money for other meals
  • All admission fees and programme materials
  • Visa support documents

Fellows arrange their own visas. FASPE provides the documents you need to apply.

The six fellowship programmes and 2027 dates

  • Law, Business, and Design and Technology: 28 May to 11 June 2027
  • Medical, Clergy and Religious Leaders, and Journalism: 18 June to 2 July 2027

Who can apply

Each programme has its own rules. In general, FASPE looks for graduate students and early-career professionals, usually with no more than 10 years of experience.

  • Business: enrolled in an MBA or related graduate programme, or working in business after a graduate or undergraduate degree.
  • Design and Technology: enrolled in a graduate programme in architecture, design, urban planning, computer science, AI, statistics, applied maths, electrical engineering or a related field, or working in these fields after a degree.
  • Journalism: a graduate student with some journalism experience who plans to work as a journalist, or a working journalist with an undergraduate or graduate degree. Published or broadcast work is preferred.
  • Law: a JD student in the second or third year, a lawyer with a JD received from May 2020, or, in countries where law is an undergraduate degree, a trainee or associate up to sixth-year level.
  • Medical: enrolled in an MD, DO or equivalent programme with at least one clinical year done before the fellowship, or in a residency programme.
  • Clergy and Religious Leaders: enrolled in graduate religious or theological training, or working as a religious leader with a relevant graduate degree received from May 2020. All faith traditions are welcome.

Can international students apply?

Yes. FASPE is based in the United States, but all eligible candidates can apply whatever their citizenship or residency. FASPE also covers travel to Berlin from outside the United States.

Is FASPE only for Jewish students?

No. FASPE has no religious, racial, political, gender or economic preferences. Fellows come from many backgrounds, and alumni say the mix of worldviews is one of the best parts of the programme.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

No test is named. All seminars are in English, and recommenders are asked to comment on your spoken and written expression.

Is there an application fee?

No application fee is mentioned.

Required documents

  • The online form on Submittable, with your contact details, schools and referees
  • Your CV or resume, including education, work, awards and publications
  • Transcripts from every university where you spent significant time (unofficial transcripts and scans are accepted, screenshots are not)
  • Answers to your programme’s short essay questions
  • Two recommendation letters from faculty or employers, sent directly by your referees

First-year graduate students without grades yet can send a letter from their dean confirming enrolment and good standing.

How to write your FASPE essays

The essay questions differ for each programme, and FASPE says they are usually the longest part of the application. Start early.

  • Pick real ethical moments from your study or work: a decision you questioned, a rule that clashed with your values, a time you spoke up or stayed silent.
  • Show reflection. FASPE wants open-minded, self-aware people who can discuss hard topics calmly in small groups.
  • Link your answers to your profession today, not only to history.
  • Show you can work with people who think differently from you.

For your letters, tell your referees what FASPE looks for: your academic or work record, how you take part in discussions, how you handle intense debates, and your leadership potential. Our guide on how to write a motivation letter also helps with essay structure.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Read the eligibility rules for your programme under the Fellowships tab on the FASPE website.
  2. Download your programme’s 2027 short essay questions and write your answers.
  3. Prepare your CV and transcripts, and line up two referees.
  4. Submit your application on Submittable by 3 January 2027, 11:59 PM US Eastern Time.
  5. Your referees receive an automatic email and upload their letters by 10 January 2027.

Selection process

FASPE selects fellows on their academic background, personal and professional experience, leadership capacity and ability to contribute to the programme and its alumni community. It aims to tell all fellows of their acceptance by early to mid March 2027.

Deadline

Deadline: 3 January 2027, 11:59 PM US Eastern Time

Recommendation letters are due on 10 January 2027. Fellows must attend the full two weeks of their programme.
