What is the ETH Student Summer Research Fellowship?

The ETH SSRF gives students their first real research experience. You join a research group in the Department of Computer Science for July and August 2027 and work on a project with the group. Professors usually suggest one or more projects, and you can raise your own idea when you arrive.

Research areas include machine learning, information security, computer systems, robotics, programming languages and software engineering, bio and medical informatics, human-computer interaction, theory and visual computing. There are also social events and trips to explore Switzerland.

What you get

  • A stipend of CHF 4,000 for housing and living costs
  • Your travel costs, refunded against receipts at the start of the programme
  • Your visa costs
  • A single room in a student house, organised by ETH (the rent is deducted from the stipend)
  • Help with your visa from the ETH Student Exchange office

ETH says the allowance is enough to live comfortably in Zurich, with some left for weekend trips.

Who can apply

  • Bachelor’s or master’s students in computer science or a close field, such as electrical engineering, mathematics or physics
  • You will have finished two years of study by July 2027 (master’s students meet this already)
  • Your expected graduation date is in 2028 or later
  • Any nationality
  • Not a current ETH Zurich student
  • Available for the full two months of July and August

I’m graduating in 2027 but starting a master’s right after. Can I apply?

No. ETH says your graduation date in your current programme must be in the year after the fellowship or later. If you finish your bachelor’s before the fellowship, you are not eligible, even with a master’s lined up.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

No formal English test is required. The programme runs in English, and your English may be checked at an interview.

Do I need research experience?

No. ETH says it reviews every application individually and does not favour students with more experience. It welcomes a range of backgrounds. You should have some course or project background in the research areas you pick, though.

Is there an application fee?

No application fee is mentioned.
