Commonwealth PhD Scholarships 2027/28 in the UK (Fully Funded)

The Commonwealth PhD Scholarship is fully funded. It pays your full tuition at a UK university, a monthly living stipend of about 1,712 pounds (around 2,000 pounds if you study in London), your return flights to the UK, and grants for study travel and fieldwork. And it is for citizens of certain lower-income and vulnerable Commonwealth countries who want to do a PhD in the UK.

What is the Commonwealth PhD Scholarship?

The UK government funds the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission to bring talented people from across the Commonwealth to study in the UK, and then take their skills home. So the PhD scholarship is its award for doctoral study.

You do a full PhD at a UK university, and the scholarship carries the cost. This one is aimed at citizens of Commonwealth countries that are least developed or classed as vulnerable, because the point is to build skills where they are most needed. So if that is your country, read on.

What you get

• Full tuition fees at your UK university.
• A monthly living stipend of about 1,712 pounds, or around 2,000 pounds if you study in the London area.
• Return airfare from your home country to the UK.
• Grants for study-related travel and, where relevant, fieldwork.
• Family allowances in some cases, for a spouse or children, if you qualify.

Which countries can apply?

This scholarship is for citizens of least-developed and vulnerable Commonwealth countries. The list includes Nigeria, Ghana’s neighbours in West Africa such as The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Togo, and countries in East and Southern Africa like Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Lesotho and Zambia, along with several countries in Asia and the Pacific. If you are not sure your country is on the list, check it on the official CSC page before you start. So do not assume you are out, and confirm it first.

Who can apply

• You are a citizen of, or were granted refugee status by, an eligible Commonwealth country, or a British protected person.
• You are able to start your PhD in the UK in September or October 2027.
• You hold, or will hold, a degree strong enough for PhD study (usually a good master’s or first degree).
• You could not otherwise afford to study in the UK without this funding.

How do I apply if I am not applying to the CSC directly?

This is the part people miss, so read it twice. You cannot send your application straight to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission. You must apply through a nominating body in your country, usually a government agency, a university, or an approved charity. You apply on the CSC’s online system, CSC Central, and your nominating body puts you forward. Find your country’s nominating agency on the official CSC page first, because if you skip that step, your application will not count.

Is there an age limit?

The CSC does not set a strict age limit for this scholarship. What matters instead is that you have the right qualifications for a PhD and a strong plan. So if you are a mature applicant coming back to study, do not count yourself out on age alone.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

Usually the UK university that admits you sets the English-language requirements, not only the CSC. Still, some applicants qualify for a waiver. So check what your chosen university asks for, and get your English proof ready early if you need it.

• A research proposal for your PhD.
• References, as the application asks.
• Proof of citizenship or eligible status.
• Any English-language proof your university requires.

How to apply, step by step

1. Read the official Commonwealth PhD Scholarship page and confirm your country is eligible.
2. Find your national nominating body and check its own steps and internal deadline, which may be earlier.
3. Line up a UK university and, ideally, a supervisor for your PhD, and prepare a clear research proposal.
4. Register on CSC Central and complete your application there before the CSC deadline.
5. Make sure your nominating body has everything it needs to put you forward in time.

How they choose

The panel judges applications on your academic record, the quality and importance of your research proposal, and how your work could help your home country develop. So your proposal carries real weight. Make it clear, focused, and honest about the problem you want to solve and why it matters at home.

Deadline

Applications close on 20 October 2026, at 16:00 UK time (BST), for study starting in September or October 2027.

Your nominating body’s own deadline may be earlier than the CSC one, so treat the real deadline as the earliest of the two and start now. A PhD application also needs a research proposal and often a supervisor, and those take time to get right. Begin this week.
