What is the Human Rights Summit Canada?

This is the 6th edition of the summit in Canada. It brings young leaders, students, professionals and advocates together to talk about human rights, leadership, education and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) of 1948.

The program includes keynote talks, human rights dialogue sessions, leadership and advocacy workshops, team challenges, networking forums and a cultural visit around Vancouver. VFRI’s application form lists the venue as the University of British Columbia (UBC). VFRI notes that it uses UBC’s name only to identify the location, so the summit is a VFRI event, not a UBC program.

Who can apply

  • Aged 16 or older
  • Any nationality
  • Students and graduates, young professionals, entrepreneurs, researchers, teachers, NGO workers, community leaders, volunteers and activists
  • Any field of study or work
  • An interest in human rights, leadership, diplomacy or social change

Is there an age limit?

There is a minimum age of 16. No upper age limit is listed.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

No English test is listed on the official page. The summit runs in English, so you should be comfortable speaking and listening in English.

Do I need human rights experience?

No. VFRI says plainly that no prior human rights experience is required. If you have a vision but don’t know where to start, the application form invites you too. What matters is showing why you care and what you want to do.

Is there an application fee?

Yes. You pay a processing fee when you submit the application, and the amount is shown on the application form. VFRI says the fee includes a virtual leadership training with a certificate.

Will I get visa support?

Yes. Selected sponsored delegates receive an official letter of invitation, notarized by a lawyer, to support a Canadian visa application. Letters are issued between 26 December 2026 and 10 January 2027.

Required documents

  • Your personal details, education and work or volunteer background
  • Your achievements and a motivation statement, written in the form
  • Your success story, if you’d like to share one (optional)

How to write your application

VFRI scores you on six points: leadership potential, commitment to human rights, community engagement, motivation and vision, achievements and impact, and how you work with people from other cultures. Write one clear example for each.

  • Leadership: describe one time you took the first step and others followed, at school, work, church, a club or in your street.
  • Human rights: pick one article of the UDHR that connects to your life or work, and say why.
  • Community: name the problem, what you did, and who it helped. Numbers help: “we tutored 40 children.”
  • Motivation: say what you want to learn in Vancouver and how you will use it when you get home.

Small, real examples beat big words. A student who ran a free reading club for six months has a strong story.
