The International Research Training Program Scholarship is funded by the Australian Government and administered by UTS. It is designed to attract strong international research students to UTS higher-degree-by-research programs.
There is no separate IRTP application form for prospective students. When you apply for admission to a UTS research degree, you can indicate that you want to be considered for scholarships. One completed admission application can be used for consideration for the IRTP and associated scholarships, including the International Research Scholarship and the UTS President’s Scholarship.
The UTS scholarship page lists the benefits above. Costs such as visa fees, flights, relocation, and other study expenses are not listed as IRTP entitlements on that page, so check the official conditions before budgeting.
To be considered, you must meet the scholarship and UTS admission requirements. UTS states that an applicant must:
Income from work or sources that are unrelated to the research course is not included in the 75% restriction. You also cannot receive an equivalent Commonwealth award that offsets higher-degree-research fees.
The IRTP is for UTS higher degrees by research. That means the scholarship is relevant to research master’s and doctoral applicants, not undergraduate or ordinary coursework master’s applicants. Your proposed project must fit an available UTS research degree and supervisor or research area. Check the UTS research-degree pages for the current courses, research strengths, and application requirements.
UTS says IRTP stipends are not available to applicants whose enrolment into a postgraduate research program has not been accepted by the University. Start the research-degree admission process early and submit every required document by the scholarship deadline. A scholarship application that is incomplete or late will not be considered.
The exact documents depend on the UTS research degree and your academic background. Before you start, read the UTS research-degree admission instructions and prepare the supporting documents requested for your course. Your research proposal should be clear about the problem you want to study, the method you will use, and why UTS is a good research fit.
There is no separate IRTP form for prospective students. Completing the UTS admission application with the scholarship option selected is the route described on the official scholarship page.
It provides tuition-fee support, a living allowance, and standard OSHC. The official UTS page does not list every possible study or visa cost as part of the scholarship, so read the conditions before accepting an offer.
Yes. UTS lists a maximum scholarship duration of up to 2 years for a Master by Research and up to 3.5 years for a PhD.
No. The IRTP is for eligible higher degrees by research. Undergraduate and standard coursework applicants should look for scholarships designed for those study levels.
The deadline shown by UTS is 7 October 2026 for the 2027 Research Session 2 (July) intake. Submit early enough to check that your application and supporting documents are complete.
Contact the UTS Graduate Research School at grs@uts.edu.au. For admission questions, use the UTS Future Research Students information page.
A fully funded research scholarship is competitive. Make sure your proposed project is specific, your research background is easy to understand, and your application explains how the project fits the UTS research environment. Do not wait until the final day to upload documents, because UTS says incomplete and late applications will not be considered.
