What is the MPIIB International Summer Internship?

The programme is called MPIIB-ISI. Interns come to Berlin from 1 September to 30 November 2027 and work on a research project with experienced scientists. You choose from projects listed by the institute when you apply.

Alongside the lab work, there is a training programme to help you prepare for a PhD application, with courses on scientific presentations, finding a research question and applying. There are also visits to other Berlin research institutes and social events, and staff help you with German paperwork.

What you get

  • A stipend of about €1,400 a month, enough for housing and living costs
  • Your travel to and from Berlin
  • Affordable housing close to the institute, offered by the programme
  • Help from the International Office with your visa process
  • Training and mentoring for a future PhD

Visa fees are not covered.

Who can apply

  • Students enrolled at a university for the whole internship (needed for the visa)
  • Bachelor’s students must have finished at least four semesters when they apply
  • A background in biology, medicine, biochemistry, epidemiology or a related field
  • A strong academic record and good English
  • Strong reasons why your access to top higher education is limited
  • Available for the full period from 1 September to 30 November 2027
  • Doing a voluntary internship, not one needed for credit points

I’ve finished my master’s. Can I apply?

Only if you are still enrolled at a university. The institute can accept only students enrolled for the whole internship, because the visa depends on it.

What if I haven’t faced big barriers?

You can still apply. Preference goes to applicants who show real limits on their education, when qualifications are similar.

Is there an application fee?

No application fee is mentioned.

Required documents

  • Transcripts from every semester you have finished, in English (your own translation is fine for the application, official translations are needed later for the visa)
  • Your motivation for the internship and for the specific project you choose
  • The details asked for in the online application

How to write your motivation

  • Name the project you want and explain why your skills fit it.
  • Describe the barriers you have faced honestly and plainly. This is central to the programme.
  • Explain how this internship moves you toward a PhD.

Our guide on how to write a motivation letter helps with structure.

How to apply, step by step

Selection process

There are three stages. The institute makes a shortlist, invites shortlisted candidates to an online interview, then sends offer letters. Final decisions come in February 2027. If you haven’t heard by 1 March 2027, your application was not retained. Check your spam folder often.
