What is the GovAI Summer Fellowship?

GovAI works on how governments, companies and society can handle advanced AI safely. Each summer it brings a group of fellows to London to work on AI governance full time for three months, from 7 June to 27 August 2027.

There are two tracks. On the Research Track, you choose your own research project with a supervisor from GovAI’s team or network. Your work could become a report, a journal article, an op-ed or a blog post. On the Applied Track, you work on a non-research project pitched by GovAI or a partner, such as running events, managing a policy project or building communications for an AI safety organisation.

On both tracks you join expert Q&As, weekly seminars, skills workshops and social events, and you talk with the team about your next career step.

What you get

  • A salary of £14,000 for the three months
  • Support for travelling to London
  • Lunch on weekdays in the London office
  • A desk in GovAI’s London office
  • Temporary work visa sponsorship if you need it
  • Mentorship and a network across government, AI companies and think tanks

Housing is not listed as a separate benefit, so plan to pay for it from the salary.

Which track should you choose?

Choose the Research Track if reading, writing and analysing policy is the main thing you want to do. GovAI suggests it for people with graduate study, research experience or policy work in fields like public policy, political science, computer science, economics, cybersecurity or China studies.

Choose the Applied Track if your strengths are in communications, operations, events, project management, fundraising or policy engagement. GovAI says these roles are some of the most in demand in the field right now.

Who can apply

  • Anyone, from any country, who wants to work on the impact of advanced AI
  • Early-career people as well as experienced researchers and professionals
  • People from government, academia, industry, startups, media or civil society
  • You must be able to work full time and in person in London for the full three months

Do I need a degree in AI or computer science?

No. GovAI says there are no specific requirements and no strict degree rules. It looks for four things: the quality of your work, relevant skills or knowledge, good judgment, and team fit. Your background can be in law, economics, policy, journalism, engineering or something else.

Can I bring my family or work part-time remotely?

If you have children or other caring responsibilities, you can work remotely up to two days a week and still be full time on the full salary. You don’t need to mention this in your application. GovAI agrees the arrangement with you after an offer.

What about the visa?

GovAI can sponsor a temporary work visa. If you need one, you’ll have to stay in the country where you apply for the visa while it is being processed, so plan your spring around that.

Is there an application fee?

No application fee is mentioned.

How to write a strong application

  • Show your best work. A clear writing sample, a policy memo or a project you ran says more than a long list of titles.
  • Explain why AI governance matters to you, in your own words.
  • For the Research Track, name the questions you want to work on and why they are useful now.
  • For the Applied Track, give real examples of events, teams or projects you have handled.
  • Don’t apply to both tracks with the same answers. Pick the one that fits your strengths.

There are three rounds. First, the written application and, if selected, a 20-minute automated abstract reasoning test. Second, a paid remote work test in January 2027. Third, a remote interview and reference checks in February 2027. Final decisions come in March 2027.
