Knight-Hennessy Scholars 2027 at Stanford University: fully funded graduate study for up to three years, open to all countries. Deadline 6 October 2026.

The Knight-Hennessy Scholars programme at Stanford University is fully funded for up to three years. It covers your Stanford tuition and fees, a stipend for living and academic expenses, and a travel stipend for one economy flight to and from Stanford each year. New scholars also get a one-time relocation stipend. It is open to citizens of every country, including African countries. One thing to know up front: it funds a graduate degree, so you must also win a place on a full-time Stanford graduate programme to hold the award.

Knight-Hennessy Scholars is Stanford’s graduate scholarship and leadership programme. It picks strong people from around the world, pays for their graduate study, and builds them into a community of future leaders.
You can use it for almost any graduate degree at Stanford, so a master’s, an MBA, a law degree, a medical degree, or a PhD all count. Alongside the funding, you join a leadership programme with other scholars, with workshops, mentoring, and travel. So you get both the degree and the network.
This is a degree scholarship, not a short fellowship. It funds your studies while you are enrolled at Stanford.
If your degree runs longer than three years, such as a PhD or an MD, your department covers the later years under its own standard funding. So you are not left unfunded after year three.
Yes, and this is the part to plan for. Knight-Hennessy funds your studies, but Stanford’s graduate school decides your admission. So you send two applications: one to Knight-Hennessy, and one to the Stanford graduate programme you want. You need both a Knight-Hennessy offer and a Stanford place to become a scholar. Start the graduate application early, because it is the harder of the two.
No. Knight-Hennessy sets no age limit. What it sets instead is a degree-date rule: your first bachelor’s degree must be from January 2020 or later. So if you finished your first degree within roughly the last seven years, you are inside the window, whatever your age.
English-language requirements come from the Stanford graduate programme you apply to, not from Knight-Hennessy. Some programmes waive the test for certain applicants. So check the English rules on your chosen Stanford programme’s page, and book any test early if you need one.
Stanford’s graduate programmes are competitive, so strong academics help. But Knight-Hennessy also weighs who you are: your independence of mind, your character, and your drive to make things better. So build the strongest honest application you can, and let both Stanford and Knight-Hennessy read you. Do not rule yourself out before they do.
Knight-Hennessy looks for three things: independence of thought, purpose that serves others, and the drive to lead. So your essays matter as much as your grades. Write honestly about what you care about and what you want to change, and back it with something real you have done.
The Knight-Hennessy application closes on 6 October 2026, at 1:00pm Pacific Time. You must also apply to your Stanford graduate programme by its own deadline, or by 1 December 2026, whichever comes first.
These two deadlines make the timeline tight, so start now. The Stanford graduate application takes the longest, so build that first and let the Knight-Hennessy essays follow. If Stanford is not your path this year, we post fully funded graduate scholarships every week, so keep checking the site.
