The Institute for Law and AI is an independent think tank that works on the legal and policy questions around artificial intelligence, so that AI is used safely and fairly. It works with governments, international organisations, and companies.
As a Summer Research Fellow, you spend 10 weeks working with a mentor on a research project that fits your background and interests in AI law and policy. The fellowship includes an in-person Convening Week in Washington, DC, from 21 to 25 June, where you meet policymakers, researchers, and others in the field.
The visa sponsorship matters, because it means an international fellow can actually take it up.
Past fellows have been graduate law students (such as JD or LLM), PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, legal academics, and professionals moving into the field.
No. The Institute says plainly that you do not need to be an expert in AI research. What they want is a genuine interest in the legal and policy side of AI and the ability to work on a research project.
No English test is listed. The work is in English and involves research and interviews, so you need strong written and spoken English.
No age limit is stated. Fellows have ranged from graduate students to established academics and career changers.
Come with a rough research question in AI law or policy that fits your background, and be ready to talk about why it matters. You do not need a finished project, just a clear interest and a reason you want to work on it with a mentor.
After your application, the team runs a video interview and a research interview. They look for a clear research interest and the ability to develop it with a mentor, not a finished expert.
29 January 2027.
The fellowship runs 14 June to 20 August 2027. You have real time here, so use it to shape a strong application and a clear research idea.
