What is the EWC Graduate Degree Fellowship?

The East-West Center is a United States institution in Hawai’i built to strengthen ties between the US, Asia, and the Pacific. Its Graduate Degree Fellowship funds people from that region to study for a master’s or PhD at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa while living together in an East-West Center community.

It is more than money. Fellows join leadership projects, cultural exchange, and service work, and they build a lifelong network of people focused on the Indo-Pacific region.

What the fellowship covers

  • General tuition and fees for your University of Hawai’i graduate programme
  • Housing in an East-West Center dormitory
  • Partial funding toward your daily expenses
  • Competitive funding for field study and conference presentations during your studies

  • You can show a commitment to the future development of the Indo-Pacific region

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

The University of Hawai’i asks for proof of English from most international applicants. Check your programme for the exact score and book the test early so it does not delay you.

Can I apply with average grades?

This is a competitive fellowship, so strong grades help. If your academic record and your commitment to the Indo-Pacific region are clear, you are a good fit. Make both plain in your application.

Required documents

  • The East-West Center fellowship application
  • A separate University of Hawai’i at Manoa graduate application to your chosen programme
  • Your transcripts and degree certificates
  • Proof of English, if required
  • References and a statement of your goals

How to write your application

Selection process

The East-West Center reviews applications on your academic strength and your commitment to the Indo-Pacific region. You also need to be admitted to your University of Hawai’i programme, so treat both applications as equally important.

Deadline

1 December 2026.

Give yourself time for two applications, the fellowship and the university, plus your English test. Start early and confirm the date on the official East-West Center page before you submit.
