What is the AAAS Policy Fellowship?

AAAS places scientists and engineers in policy offices so they can contribute technical knowledge and learn how government works. The fellowship is a professional placement, not a university degree.

Who can apply?

  • You hold a doctoral-level degree such as a PhD, ScD, MD, DVM, EdD or PharmD in a qualified field, or a Master’s in engineering plus three years of professional engineering experience.
  • You are a US citizen. Dual citizenship with the United States is accepted.
  • You can receive US federal funds and meet Selective Service rules where they apply.
  • You are not a permanent federal employee or a current AAAS employee.

Can an international applicant apply?

Only if the applicant is also a US citizen. Permanent residence by itself is not listed as enough for this fellowship.

What does the application require?

The application includes an eligibility check, supporting documents and three recommendation letters. Applicants must also provide proof of US citizenship. Read the official application overview before requesting letters so your referees have enough time.
