The Hertz Fellowship 2027 provides up to five years of PhD funding valued at as much as $250,000. It supports US citizens and permanent residents pursuing a PhD in applied physical or biological science, mathematics or engineering at a university in the United States.
You must be entering your first or second PhD year in fall 2027 and plan to use your research to address major problems facing society.

What is this opportunity?
The Hertz Foundation invests in early-stage PhD researchers with deep technical ability, creative problem-solving skills and a record of leadership. The selection process includes written review and interviews.

Who can apply?
- You are a US citizen or permanent resident.
- You will be a first- or second-year PhD student in fall 2027.
- Your PhD is full-time and in person at a US institution.
- Your field is applied physical or biological science, mathematics or engineering.
- You are not applying for a professional degree such as an MBA, JD or standalone MD.
Can an international student apply?
Only if you already hold US permanent residence. Citizenship or permanent residence is an official eligibility rule, not a preference.
Do I need to attend a university on the current list?
The foundation works with many participating institutions and says it may try to add another school for a selected fellow. Check your institution and the current conditions on the official eligibility page.
