World Bank Young Professionals Program 2027 is a paid, fully funded career program for graduates with 2 to 6 years of experience. Deadline 30 September 2026.

The World Bank Young Professionals Program 2027, the WBG YPP, is a paid, fully funded career program. You join the World Bank Group as a staff member on a two-year contract, with a competitive salary and benefits, and a possible G-type visa for you and your dependents.

It is not a scholarship and not a study program. It is a way into a career at one of the world’s biggest development institutions, based mainly in Washington DC. It is for people who already hold a graduate degree and have a few years of professional experience, and who want to work on development, finance, economics, or a related field.

What is the World Bank Young Professionals Program?

The YPP brings in early-career professionals from around the world and puts them straight into real World Bank work. You start on a two-year term contract at a mid-career staff level, and strong performers can move on to a longer renewable contract.

The work covers the areas the World Bank Group operates in: economics, finance, public policy, infrastructure, energy, health, education, and more. It is competitive and the bar is high, but plenty of professionals from Africa and other developing regions get in each year.

What you get

  • A two-year term contract as a mid-career staff member, with the possibility of a five-year renewable contract after
  • A competitive salary and benefits set by the World Bank Group’s own criteria
  • A possible G-type visa for you and your dependents
  • Training, mentoring, and rotations across World Bank teams

The World Bank does not publish a fixed salary figure, because pay and benefits follow its established staff criteria and are not negotiated individually.

Who can apply

  • You are a citizen of a World Bank Group member country. Most African countries are members, so check that yours is on the list.
  • You hold a master’s degree or higher in a field relevant to the World Bank’s work, completed before the September start date.
  • You have between 2 and 6 years of relevant professional experience as of 1 September 2026.
  • You have an excellent command of spoken and written English.
  • You are not currently a World Bank Group staff member.

Is there an age limit?

No. The World Bank states there is no age requirement for the YPP. Eligibility is based on your degree and your professional experience, not your age.

Do I need a specific degree?

You need a graduate-level degree, a master’s or higher, in a field that fits the World Bank’s work, such as economics, finance, development, public policy, or a technical area like engineering, energy, or health. Your degree must be finished before the program starts.

How much experience do I need?

Between two and six years of relevant experience as of 1 September 2026. If you have less than two years of experience, keep building your record, and see our other internships and entry programs in the meantime. If you have more than six years, the World Bank has other mid-career routes worth looking at.

Do I need a second language?

English is required. Knowing another World Bank working language, such as French, Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese, or others, is an advantage for many roles, especially if you want to work on regions where those languages are used.

Required documents

  • Your CV
  • Proof of your graduate degree
  • Evidence of your relevant professional experience
  • Statements or essays as set out in the online application
  • References as requested

Build your final list from the official YPP application, because the World Bank sets the exact requirements each cycle.

How to write a strong application

The YPP wants to see impact, not just titles. For each role you have held, show what changed because you were there: a number, a result, a problem you helped solve. Tie your experience to the World Bank’s mission of reducing poverty and supporting development. Write clearly and let real results carry the application. This is competitive, so give yourself time to draft and sharpen it.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Open the official World Bank YPP page and read this cycle’s full requirements.
  2. Check that your country is a World Bank Group member and that you meet the degree and experience rules.
  3. Prepare your CV and gather proof of your degree and your work experience.
  4. Complete the online application, including any essays and references.
  5. Submit before 30 September 2026, 11:59pm UTC, and keep copies of everything.

Selection process

Applications are screened against the degree and experience rules first. Shortlisted candidates go through assessments and interviews with World Bank panels. Those selected are offered a place in the program, starting around September 2027. The process is thorough and takes several months, so apply on time and be patient after you submit.

Deadline

30 September 2026, 11:59pm UTC.

The application portal opened on 1 September 2026, so it is open now, and the window is short. If you meet the degree and experience rules, do not wait for the last day, because the online form and its essays take time to do well. Confirm the exact date and time on the official World Bank page before you submit.
