What is the Max Planck MtL Internship?

Matter to Life is a research field that connects biology, chemistry, physics, and engineering to study the building blocks of living systems. The Max Planck School runs it across a group of laboratories in Germany.

The URO part stands for Undergraduate Research Opportunities. It brings undergraduate students into these laboratories for 10 weeks to work on one research question, learn the methods researchers use every day, and experience Germany’s research environment. Many students use it to decide their next step and to build the international contacts that help with graduate school later.

What you get

  • Travel to and from your home country
  • Accommodation in Germany during the 10 weeks
  • A monthly allowance for day-to-day expenses
  • 10 weeks of research experience in a Matter to Life laboratory
  • Supervision and mentoring from experienced researchers

The program does not print one fixed figure for the allowance. When you are selected, you receive the current amount in writing. The support is there so you can focus on the research.

Research areas

The internship suits students in science and related fields, including:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Informatics and computer science
  • Materials science
  • Engineering and bioengineering

Participating laboratories are located across Germany, including Munich, Heidelberg, Göttingen, Dresden, Jena, Mainz, Münster, Potsdam, and Aachen.

Who can apply

  • You are currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s or undergraduate degree, and you stay enrolled for the whole 10 weeks.
  • You have completed at least 1.5 semesters by the time you apply, and at least two semesters by the time the internship starts.
  • You have a minimum GPA of 1.7 on the German scale, where 1.0 is the top mark.
  • Your background is in a science or related field.
  • Students of all nationalities can apply.

Is there an age limit?

There is no stated age limit. What matters is that you are an enrolled Bachelor’s student for the full internship. If you started your first degree later in life, you can still apply.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL?

No IELTS or TOEFL score is listed as a fixed requirement. The laboratories work in English, so you need to be comfortable using English for research. Check the application portal for any language requirement for your chosen lab.

Do I need past research experience?

No. The program says clearly that prior research experience is not required. This internship exists to give undergraduate students their first research experience, so if you have never worked in a lab, this is exactly the place to start.

Required documents

  • CV, maximum two pages
  • Current university transcript
  • Your preferred Matter to Life laboratory
  • Personal statement, one page
  • The dates you are free to do the 10-week internship

Build your final list from the official application page, since details can change.

How to write your personal statement

Your one-page statement is where the team gets to know you beyond your transcript. Write about why this field pulls you and why you chose that particular laboratory. One clear, honest reason beats a page of big words. Keep to one page, answer what they ask, and read it aloud before you send it.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Open the official Matter to Life URO page and read the list of laboratories.
  2. Choose the lab whose research fits your interest. This choice shapes your application.
  3. Write your one-page personal statement.
  4. Prepare your two-page CV and your current transcript.
  5. Note the weeks you are free between June and November 2027.
  6. Submit everything through the official portal before the deadline.

Selection process

Applications are reviewed and matched with laboratories that have space. If a lab wants you, the team gets in touch with the next steps. A clear first-choice lab and a strong personal statement support your application.

Deadline

1 October 2026.

The internship runs for 10 weeks at some point between June and November 2027, and you agree the exact dates with your lab. Confirm the deadline on the official page, and give yourself time to choose a lab and write your statement.
