Elevate Your Journalism: Why You Should Apply for the Reuters Institute Fellowship at Oxford

In the fast-paced world of 24-hour news cycles and constant deadlines, it’s rare for a journalist to have the luxury of stepping back to think deeply about the future of their craft.
If you are a mid-career journalist looking to recharge, research a critical industry issue, and connect with a global network of peers, the Journalist Fellowship Programme at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism might be the career-defining opportunity you’ve been waiting for.
What is the Journalist Fellowship?
Applications are now open for the 2026-27 academic year. Here is everything you need to know about this world-class program.
Based at the University of Oxford, this program brings together approximately 30 practicing journalists from across the globe each year. For three or six months, fellows step away from their daily reporting duties to explore the news industry’s biggest challenges—from AI and misinformation to newsroom diversity and press freedom.
Why Apply?
This isn’t just an academic retreat; it is an immersion into the cutting edge of media research.
• Access to Oxford: As a fellow, you have access to the University of Oxford’s world-renowned libraries, research centers, and seminars.
• Global Networking: You’ll be part of a diverse cohort of journalists from every corner of the world, sharing insights on how the media operates in different political and economic climates.
• Impactful Research: You will work on a personal project designed to have a direct impact on your career, your newsroom, or the wider media industry.
• Fully Funded: Most fellowships are fully funded, providing a monthly stipend of £2,000 to cover living expenses, plus travel and visa costs.
Who is Eligible?
The program is looking for mid-career journalists with a minimum of five years of experience. Whether you are a staff reporter, an editor, or a freelancer, the primary requirement is a commitment to returning to the industry and applying what you’ve learned.
Life in Oxford
The fellowship is as much about the community as it is about the research. Your weeks will be filled with:
• Seminars: Led by industry leaders and top academics.
• Symposiums: Presenting your findings to the public and peers.
• London Access: Being just an hour from London, you’ll have easy access to major news hubs like the BBC, The Guardian, and the Financial Times.
How to Apply
If you’re ready to take your career to the next level, don’t wait. The deadline for the next intake is Friday, 13 February 2026.
